Season's Readings – A new pop-up shop is opening in Machynlleth - 20 November 2017

A new pop-up shop is opening in the market town of Machynlleth this week.

Llyfrau @52 Stryd Maengwyn will open its doors on Saturday (18 November) and will provide readers with a feast of books for Christmas.

The Welsh Books Council is behind the venture, which aims to increase the profile and sales of books in an area where there is currently no Welsh-language bookshop.

‘The pop-up will give the people of Machynlleth and the surrounding area the opportunity to see the fantastic range of books on offer this Christmas,’ said Helena O’Sullivan, Head of Sales & Marketing at the Books Council. ‘With so many incredible reads to choose from this festive period, the pop-up provides the perfect place to shop for Christmas gifts.’

The shop, which is located on Maengwyn Street in the centre of Machynlleth, will be open from Monday to Saturday, 9.30–5.30pm for the next five weeks, and will sell a variety of Welsh and English-language books that will appeal to a wide audience of all ages and reading tastes.

‘Christmas is a crucial trading period for the publishers as well as for the Books Council’s Distribution Centre,’ said Helena. ‘This surprise pop-up is a trial; if it’s a success we hope to join forces with other bookshops and give them the same opportunity in the future.’

A special event will be held at the pop-up on Friday, 2 December, where there will be a chance to buy the latest books for Christmas and meet a few of the authors. There will also be mulled wine and mince pies on offer for all!
