Producing a film to publicise a book - 26 June 2014

This is the first time that a publishing company in Wales has produced a film to publicise a Welsh language book.

The subject of the film is  Miwsig Moss Morgan, a new novel by author Siân Lewis from Llanilar. This novel came very close to winning one of the major literary prizes at last year’s National Eisteddfod. Said Bethan M. Hughes, one of the adjudicators of the Gwobr Goffa Daniel Owen Prize, "It’s an alluring, mesmerising and rich novel . . . this is a skilled and experienced author who creates deep, varied and memorable characters."

Miwsig Moss Morgan  is Siân’s first novel for adults. She’s an experienced children’s author who has won the prestigious Gwobr Tir na n-Og prize twice for her work.

The short film was filmed in Menai Bridge, Pwllfanogl near the former home of the late artist Kyffin Williams, and at an unique location above Penmaenmawr. The camerman and director was Rhys Edwards from Felinheli who has been nominated for a Bafta Cymru award several times, and who last year won an important national prize for his film work.

Said Rhys, "It has been a pleasure to work on this film, and to have the opportunity to interpret Siân's work."

Said Marred Glynn Jones, Gwasg y Bwthyn Creative Editor, "It has been an interesting experience to see Rhys at work, and the locations have been wonderful. The film succeeds in creating an atmosphere and Rhys has captured the spirit of the novel and also Moss Morgan, an enigmatic character who has an influence on a number of people in the book.

"I would like to thank the Grants Department of the Welsh Books Council for supporting this project. Marketing grants are available for publicising books. Instead of having a book launch we decided this time to spend the money on producing this film which has been distributed through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Vimeo."

Says Arwel Jones of the Grants Department, "This is an exciting project. It’s important that we use the social media to promote Welsh language books in order to reach a new audience."

As well as producing the film, Gwasg y Bwthyn has also launched a selfie competition linked to  Miwsig Moss Morgan. Those wanting to compete should take a picture of themselves looking out to sea at their favourite location (Moss Morgan enjoys sitting in front of his cave home and looking out to sea), and send it to Gwasg y Bwthyn’s Facebook page, or on Twitter,  @Gwasgybwthyn  #miwsigmossmorgan, or by e-mail to The winner will receive a copy of the novel, and the prestige and honour of winning the company’s first ever selfie competition.
