The poet and popular children's author T. Llew Jones has passed away at the age of 93.

Even though he was a teacher by profession, he was best known as a successful author of books for children. He won the Tir na n-Og Award twice – he was the winner when the award was first presented in 1976 and again in 1990. He also received the Mary Vaughan Jones Award in 1991 for his contribution to children's literature.

Gwerfyl Pierce Jones, Director of the Books Council, said: 'He was a master of story writing for children in the Welsh language. He wrote throughout the second half of the twentieth century and leaves a legacy of popular books which still gives pleasure to children today. He was also a great communicator and a superb storyteller. He loved children and they loved his work. He was a good friend of the Books Council and we will greatly miss his contribution and friendship.'
